“The goal of the race is to have an enjoyable day with like-minded people who are interested in a borderline crazy but a fun, hard workout followed by food, drink, meeting new people and catching up with old friends.”

Sandbagger is a non-stop, self supported, athletic event that utilizes the lakes, trails, gravel and dirt roads of rural Kansas. The invite only, handicapped event among friends with no fee. The goal of the event is for every person to have a legitimate chance to win with distances and times handicapped to ideally allow everyone to finish each event at the same time.

The wild tri event includes, Biking, Swimming, and Running. ALL of the biking and running will be on the incredible GRAVEL in and around Linn County, Kansas. The swimming will be done in the crazy warm spring fed, Sugar Lake.

The idea of the Sandbagger race was birthed during a Tim Howard and Dr. Jay Burlingame bike ride. We discussed how fun it would be to participate in an event where the possible winner might extend beyond a small group of 10-20 people. The basic idea was to handicap a race similar to how golf is handicapped, comparing actual performance during an event to the expected outcome. The first two Sandbagger events were held in 2017-2018 and were exclusive triathlon events targeting 3 hours of maximum effort. The winning Sandbagger was required to carry the trophy ("rock") during the following years event recognizing they were the biggest cheater the previous year.
